The Northern Virginia- and Los Angeles-based firm of Cook Architecture is an award-winning, architecture and interior design practice, known nationally for its expertise in conceiving a wide array of new structures and re-imagining existing spaces. To the firm’s credit are more than 200 projects, in locations including California, Arizona, Washington D.C., Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, New York, Maine.
“Cook has long been the go-to firm for clients seeking high art design solutions and value,” says Richard Olsen, senior editor of Architectural Digest. “Larry and Michael are brilliant at interpreting and articulating their clients’ ideas. They have the rare ability to bring clients into the design process as real participants.”
Lawrence D. Cook, FAIA, and Michael Cook, AIA, are a father-and-son team working together since 2000.
Lawrence D. Cook, who received his Masters of Architecture degree from Catholic University and undergraduate degree from the University of Pennsylvania, is a licensed architect in Maryland, Virginia, and Pennsylvania. Over his 40 year practice, he received numerous awards and honors include election to the American Institute of Architects (AIA) College of Fellows, its highest honor; multiple Outstanding Service Awards from several religious and community organizations; and Chair of the National Design Jury for the American Institute of Architects. For two terms, Lawrence was National President of the Interfaith Forum on Religion, Art and Architecture. He is founder of Lawrence Cook and Associates in 1971. With Michael Cook, they established Cook Architecture in 2004.
Michael Cook received his Masters of Architecture degree from the Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arc). He is a licensed architect in both California and Maryland and a furniture designer. Prior to joining his father’s firm, Michael worked for the world renowned Gehry Partners LLP, the contemporary artist Mike Kelley, and the architecture firm Frederick Fischer and Partners. His many awards and commendations include, most recently, an Excellence in Architecture Award from the Virginia Society of the AIA, and a Historic Preservation Award for the remodel of a mid-century modern residence in Silver Spring, Maryland.
Cook Architecture’s services are always tailored to the client. “We begin,” Michael says, “by assisting the development of the client’s programmatic needs. No project is too small, and we believe that all spaces- furniture and other objects in them- deserve special attention and care.”
Cook Architecture’s core value system is predicated on establishing architectural achievement at the highest artistic level, maintaining exacting project management standards, playing a positive communication role between all parties, and exercising budget control from start to finish.
